Akpoti Condemns AAU Student Arrest, Calls for Immediate Release

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan condemns AAU student arrest, urging Edo State authorities to release 52 students and respect constitutional rights

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has condemned the arrest and alleged unlawful detention of 52 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, describing it as a dangerous attempt to suppress youth voices and democratic expression.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Kogi Central lawmaker called for the immediate and unconditional release of the students, emphasising that peaceful protest is a constitutional right.

“Dialogue, not detention, is the pathway to peace and progress,” she said.

Akpoti-Uduaghan criticised Edo State authorities for their handling of the situation, urging them to prioritise growing insecurity, including kidnappings and violent crimes, over targeting courageous voices.

“Our youths must not be criminalised for raising concerns about issues affecting their welfare and future,” she added.

The senator warned that arresting students only deepens public mistrust and widens the gap between government and citizens.

She reaffirmed her solidarity with the detained students and their families, emphasising her commitment to justice, democratic values, and youth empowerment.
