Abba Atiku defection to APC marks a strategic shift, boosting President Tinubu’s 2027 re election drive and reshaping North East politics
Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, defected to the All Progressives Congress in Abuja on Thursday.

The defection occurred at the National Assembly complex, where Abubakar Atiku Abubakar formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party.
The move included a public pledge to support the re election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The development is widely seen as a strategic and symbolic blow to Atiku Abubakar’s future presidential ambition.
Political observers also describe the Abba Atiku defection to APC as a significant boost to the ruling party’s consolidation in the North East.
Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, popularly known as Abba, was received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin.
Senior All Progressives Congress leaders from the North East geopolitical zone also attended the event.
Addressing party leaders and supporters, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar described the defection as historic and deeply personal.
He announced the dissolution of his political platform, the Haske Atiku Organisation, founded in 2022.
Abubakar Atiku Abubakar directed all coordinators and members of the organisation to immediately join the All Progressives Congress.
He urged them to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda ahead of 2027.
Welcoming the new entrant, the All Progressives Congress National Vice Chairman for the North East, Mustapha Salihu, called the defection far reaching.
Mustapha Salihu said the decision reflected a new phase of politics without borders and ideological alignment.
The party assured Abubakar Atiku Abubakar of equal rights and full participation within the All Progressives Congress.
Senator Barau I Jibrin described the decision as bold, wise and principled.
He said Abubakar Atiku Abubakar returned from the United States after closely observing the Tinubu administration’s reforms.
The Deputy Senate President described Abubakar Atiku Abubakar as focused, determined and representative of Nigeria’s future leadership.
A presidential aide, Alhaji Mahmoud Abdullahi, also assured him of President Tinubu’s support within the party.
The event’s high point was the renaming of the Haske Atiku Organisation to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation.

The change signalled a complete political realignment and firm support for President Tinubu’s second term bid.
