Amaechi, Atiku Suffer Setback as ADC Aspirant Joins Wike

ADC aspirant Sokonte Davies joins Wike’s Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State after previously supporting Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi

A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress in Rivers State, Dr Sokonte Davies, has joined the Rainbow Coalition, a multi-party political group championed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

Davies, a former member of the House of Representatives, made the political move public after visiting Wike at his residence in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, disclosed Davies’ decision in a social media post while sharing photographs of the former lawmaker with the minister.

The development represents a notable shift in Rivers State politics, particularly because Davies had previously been identified as a strong supporter of ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi.

His decision to join Wike’s coalition comes as political realignments continue to gather momentum in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike, who has spent about a week in the state, has held meetings with several political leaders as part of efforts to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The minister’s engagement with political stakeholders has added fresh momentum to the evolving alliances in the state, where different political interests are positioning themselves ahead of the elections.

Davies’ movement into the Rainbow Coalition could therefore further reshape the political calculations among opposition groups and the network being built around Wike.

The latest development also comes against the backdrop of continuing efforts by political parties and their prominent figures to consolidate support, attract influential politicians and strengthen their structures ahead of the 2027 polls.
