ADC Crisis Deepens as Faction Seeks US Sanctions

ADC crisis US sanctions petition emerges as faction urges US embassy to act over alleged leadership takeover in Nigeria

A faction of the African Democratic Congress has escalated an internal dispute by petitioning the United States Embassy in Abuja over an alleged unconstitutional takeover of the party’s leadership.

The group, led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, is urging the United States to impose sanctions, including visa restrictions, on individuals accused of undermining the party’s democratic processes.

In a formal complaint, Nafiu Bala Gombe claimed that certain politicians violated the party’s constitution following the resignation of former National Chairman Ralph Okey Nwosu and members of the National Working Committee.

Nafiu Bala Gombe asserted that, as the remaining Deputy National Chairman who did not resign, he is constitutionally entitled to assume leadership of the party.

He alleged that external political actors are interfering in the party’s affairs, attempting to seize control without due process.

The faction has also approached the courts, seeking legal redress, while accusing opponents of spreading propaganda to legitimise their claims.

Nafiu Bala Gombe further dismissed allegations linking the crisis to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that neither he nor his group has any affiliation with the President or the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In the petition, the faction called on the United States to take decisive action against what it described as anti-democratic practices within the party.

The group warned that failure to act could embolden attempts to undermine internal democracy, not only within the party but across Nigeria’s political landscape.
