ADC Condemns Edo Gun Attack, Moves to ECOWAS Court

ADC Edo gun attack condemned as party moves to ECOWAS Court, citing threats to Peter Obi, John Oyegun and Olumide Akpata

The African Democratic Congress has condemned a gun attack and alleged assassination attempt targeting former governor John Oyegun, party leader Peter Obi, and former Labour Party candidate Olumide Akpata in Edo State.

In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of promoting political violence and said the incident was part of a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition figures nationwide.

The party described the attack as deliberate, aimed at silencing political opponents, and warned that such acts are unacceptable in a democratic system.

ADC also raised concerns over statements by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, alleging that he had previously indicated he could not guarantee Peter Obi’s safety and claimed the party sponsors cult groups.

“No governor or political party owns any state in Nigeria. All citizens have the right to move freely, speak openly, and participate in politics without fear,” the statement read.

ADC said it is documenting all cases of alleged terrorism by the ruling party and plans to present the findings to diplomatic missions and the ECOWAS Court of Human Rights. The party reaffirmed that it would not be intimidated.

“Let no one be left in doubt: regardless of the level of intimidation, ADC will not bow to terror and will take all lawful means to protect its members and facilities across the country,” the statement added, urging members to continue lawful political activities without fear.
