Many local government chapters are inactive or divided due to ongoing leadership disputes, including suspensions and competing claims to state-level positions.
A prominent crisis in October 2025 involved the suspension of Sule-Iko Sadeeq for allegedly declaring himself state chairman, while the officially recognised chairman, Sufiyanu Bala, was later suspended by another faction.
The situation has been compounded by legal interventions, including a High Court injunction restraining certain factions allegedly aligned with former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, from parading themselves as party leaders pending the outcome of litigation.
Despite Malami’s entry as the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Kebbi, political momentum has been slowed by ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission investigations.
The ruling All Progressives Congress continues to dominate local government structures, winning all 21 chairmanships and 225 councillorship seats in the 2024 elections.
