Adeleke Dismisses Oyebamiji’s “Moribund” Health Claim

Governor Ademola Adeleke rejects claims that the Osun health system is moribund, citing reforms and sector-wide improvements

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has dismissed claims by the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, that the Osun health system is moribund, describing the allegation as misleading and detached from reality.

The governor’s response was contained in a statement issued on Friday from the Government House in Osogbo and signed by his spokesperson, Rasheed Olawale.

Governor Adeleke said the claim amounted to baseless disinformation and had further isolated the opposition candidate in the eyes of the public.

According to the statement, Osun currently ranks first in the South West in the provision of primary health care, a position the state has maintained since 2024.

Adeleke said more than 200 primary health centres were renovated under his administration, with another phase of upgrades ongoing across the state.

He accused previous administrations of mismanaging a 20 million dollar World Bank grant meant for health centre renovation, adding that Osun would not return to what he described as an era of insensitive leadership.

Oyebamiji, a former Commissioner for Finance in the state, had made the remarks during his acceptance speech after winning the 2026 APC governorship primary, where he pledged to revitalise the health sector and reduce medical tourism.

In response, the governor outlined several reforms carried out by his administration, including the upgrade of hospitals with modern medical equipment and improved diagnostic facilities.

He cited the procurement of digital medical devices, installation of renal dialysis services through a public–private partnership, and ongoing work on a 10-bed intensive care unit as part of the health sector overhaul.

Adeleke also highlighted improvements in staff welfare, noting that his government implemented the Medical Residency Training Fund at the Osun State Teaching Hospital, making it the first state-owned teaching hospital in Nigeria to do so.

He said allowances were reviewed upward, call rooms renovated, unconfirmed staff regularised, and promotion exercises conducted to restore career progression within the health workforce.

The governor added that Osun’s health sector reforms had gained national recognition, with the state emerging winner of the Primary Health Care Challenge in both 2024 and 2025.

Adeleke concluded that the opposition candidate should reflect on his record in office, stressing that Osun’s health sector had become a strong model rather than a failing system.
