Sowore Backs Aisha Yesufu FCT Senate Ambition

Omoyele Sowore has supported Aisha Yesufu’s bid for the FCT Senate seat in 2027 but criticised her choice of political party

Rights activist Omoyele Sowore has expressed support for fellow activist Aisha Yesufu ahead of her declared ambition to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Sowore made his position known on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’, where he reacted to questions about Yesufu’s entry into partisan politics.

He described her decision to join the race as a positive development, saying more civic-minded individuals should participate directly in politics rather than remain on the sidelines.

The activist said he had always encouraged Yesufu to consider political office, noting that activism and governance are closely connected in driving societal change.

“I truly support her. I’ve always told her that good people who believe that they can do things should get into politics,” Sowore said.

He recalled that Yesufu had previously rejected political participation and criticised activists who contested for public office, but said her recent decision reflected a shift in perspective.

Sowore added that even though he supports her ambition, he disagrees with her decision to align with the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

“I hope she wins, even though I think that she’s in the wrong party. She should have joined our party,” he said.

Aisha Yesufu recently declared her intention to contest for the FCT Senate seat after moving from the African Democratic Congress and aligning with the Nigerian Democratic Congress.

Her political move has continued to generate reactions within Nigeria’s activist and political circles, particularly among supporters of opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sowore maintained that meaningful change requires activists to actively participate in governance rather than remain outside the political system.
