APC Caucus Divided Over Bala Mohammed Defection Plan

Members of the All Progressives Congress caucus from Bauchi State in the National Assembly have resolved to establish a special committee to manage issues surrounding the possible defection of Governor Bala Mohammed into the party.

The APC Bala Mohammed defection discussions followed a tense meeting in Abuja, where lawmakers expressed sharply divided views on the political implications of the governor’s anticipated move from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Speaking after the meeting, acting caucus secretary Dabo Ismail said the newly formed committee would define the group’s conditions and expectations if Bala Mohammed proceeds with the defection.

Dabo Ismail explained that the committee would also engage key stakeholders and serve as the caucus’ official channel in all discussions relating to possible defections from the PDP-led government.

The APC Bala Mohammed defection issue has, however, exposed internal concerns, with caucus chairman Sama’ila Dahuwa criticising the party’s national leadership for failing to consult state stakeholders.

Sama’ila Dahuwa described the lack of engagement as unacceptable and cautioned against imposing decisions without adequate dialogue, warning that such an approach could undermine party unity.

Despite the tensions, the caucus reiterated that Bala Mohammed remains welcome in the APC, while emphasising the need for a structured and inclusive process.

The committee, which includes senior party figures such as a serving minister, former governors and senators, is expected to present its findings and recommendations to the party’s national leadership.

The development underscores a delicate political moment, as the APC seeks to balance expansion efforts with internal cohesion ahead of future electoral contests.
