Atiku Ally Aslam Aliyu Defects to APC, Criticises ADC

Atiku Ally Aslam Aliyu Defects to APC, saying the ADC lacks a concrete plan for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election

Aslam Aliyu, a longtime political ally of former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that the opposition lacks a credible strategy to address Nigeria’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general election.

Announcing her decision in a statement on Sunday, Aliyu said the move followed what she described as a prolonged period of reflection on Nigeria’s political future and the ability of opposition parties to offer an effective alternative to the current administration.

Aliyu said she had remained loyal to Atiku’s political movement for nearly two decades but had concluded that the opposition had failed to develop a convincing blueprint for national development.

“The ADC has no concrete plan for the country, other than to criticise the government without bringing a single viable solution to the table. Political culture must move past theatrical criticism and embrace measurable progress,” she said.

Calling on Nigerians to rally behind the APC, Aliyu urged young people, women and other opposition members to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying she believes the ruling party offers a more structured platform for national development.

“I am a mother, calling on patriotic Nigerian youths, women, and forward-thinking opposition members to abandon counterproductive politics and join hands with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” she said.

Aliyu also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s re-election prospects, declaring that the presidency would remain with the APC after the 2027 polls.

“There is no vacancy in Aso Rock Villa, as Bola Ahmed Tinubu will emerge as the winner of the presidential election come 2027, by the grace of Almighty Allah,” she added.

The Zamfara-born politician said her defection was motivated by a desire to contribute more effectively to governance through what she described as a more organised political platform.

Her departure comes as political realignments continue to gather pace ahead of the 2027 general election, with both the APC and opposition parties working to consolidate support across the country.

In recent months, defections have remained a recurring feature of Nigeria’s political landscape as parties seek to strengthen their positions before the next electoral cycle.

At the time of publication, neither Atiku Abubakar nor the African Democratic Congress had publicly responded to Aliyu’s remarks.

Their response may provide further insight into the opposition’s strategy as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
