Atiku Faces Tough Running Mate Dilemma Ahead of 2027 Vote

Atiku running mate dilemma 2027 intensifies as ADC candidate considers Southeast and South-South options amid strategic political calculations

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is confronting a growing Atiku running mate dilemma 2027 as political consultations intensify over the choice of a vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The debate follows the conclusion of the ADC presidential primaries, where Atiku emerged as flag bearer after securing the highest number of votes, shifting attention to the delicate task of selecting a running mate capable of strengthening his national appeal.

Political discussions within party circles indicate a strong focus on the South-East and South-South regions, with prominent names such as World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi featuring in early speculations.

However, concerns have emerged over the feasibility of some of these options, particularly after reports suggested that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has distanced herself from political consideration due to her ongoing international commitments at the WTO.

The Atiku running mate dilemma 2027 has further deepened with divergent opinions within political and legal circles over the most strategic regional choice.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Sogbeye Eli, argued that selecting a running mate from the South-East may not yield significant electoral gains due to the region’s existing political alignment.

In contrast, legal practitioner Maduabuchi Idam maintained that a South-East choice could strengthen national cohesion and improve Atiku’s electoral competitiveness against rival blocs, describing it as a potentially decisive strategy.

Meanwhile, ADC chieftain Dele Momodu fuelled further speculation after a social media post suggested a possible Atiku-Momodu ticket, describing it as a “greater Nigeria” partnership, though no official confirmation has been made.

Atiku’s aide on public communication, Phrank Shaibu, stated that the eventual decision would not be based on sentiment or symbolism, but on competence and national interest, stressing the need for a strong governing partnership.

Shaibu added that the vice-presidential choice would be guided by capacity, experience, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to governance and national unity.

As consultations continue, political observers say the decision could significantly shape the electoral dynamics of the 2027 presidential race, with regional balance and party cohesion emerging as key factors.
