Bayelsa NDC Vows to Unseat Diri Despite Alleged Inducements

Bayelsa NDC Vows to Unseat Diri, insisting alleged inducements will not stop its 2027 governorship ambition

Bayelsa State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Hon. Dauprebo Ikuromo, has declared that no form of political inducement will prevent the party from pursuing its ambition of taking over the state’s leadership in the 2027 elections.

Speaking with journalists in Yenagoa on Wednesday, Ikuromo accused the Bayelsa State Government of attempting to create divisions within the party by allegedly offering financial incentives to aspirants.

He urged the administration of Governor Douye Diri to focus instead on governance and addressing pressing developmental challenges facing the state.

According to the NDC chairman, the party remains united and committed to its political objective despite reports of internal dissatisfaction and external pressure.

“No form of inducement can divert the NDC from its objective of assuming leadership in the state,” Ikuromo said.

The opposition leader called on Governor Diri’s administration to adopt a more inclusive leadership style that prioritises the welfare of Bayelsans and promotes sustainable development, economic growth and improved living conditions.

He also argued that resources allegedly being used to influence political actors should be redirected towards addressing critical infrastructure and development concerns, including the issue of gas turbines that have reportedly been commissioned but remain non-operational.

The comments come as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties across the country intensifying efforts to strengthen their structures and consolidate support.

Addressing concerns over reported grievances within the NDC, Ikuromo said the party had established a comprehensive mechanism for resolving disputes under the leadership of former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.

He assured party members that the National Executive Council would release the list of candidates for various positions within the timeline prescribed by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The NDC chairman also praised Senator Dickson for his role in overseeing the party’s primary election process, describing his leadership as fair, prudent and inclusive.

“His ability to manage the primary election process nationwide with fairness, tact and wisdom ensured equitable opportunities for all aspirants,” Ikuromo said.

A secondary highlight of the party’s position was its commendation of efforts to expand youth and women’s participation in the political process.

The Bayelsa NDC said Senator Dickson’s commitment to greater inclusion reflected the principles of affirmative action and strengthened internal democracy within the party.

The party further urged members and supporters across Bayelsa State to remain united and focused as preparations for future electoral contests continue.

While Governor Diri’s administration has not publicly responded to the allegations raised by the NDC, the remarks underscore the increasingly competitive political atmosphere in Bayelsa as parties position themselves ahead of the next election cycle.
