Bayelsa PDP Urges Diri to Address Rising Hunger, Poverty

The Bayelsa PDP has urged Governor Douye Diri to address rising hunger and poverty, but the state government says its welfare programmes are delivering results

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Douye Diri to make the fight against rising hunger and poverty a priority in the second half of 2026, arguing that worsening economic hardship has left many residents struggling to meet their daily needs.

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ikaebimo Mark, the opposition said the rising cost of living had continued to erode the purchasing power of households despite increased revenue flowing to the state through higher derivation receipts and federal allocations.

The party maintained that hunger and poverty affect people regardless of political affiliation, religion or ethnicity and should receive urgent government attention.

According to the statement, several memoranda of understanding announced by the state government have yet to produce the level of investment needed to create jobs and stimulate industrial growth.

The PDP urged the administration to implement policies that would expand economic activities, support small and medium-sized enterprises, empower young people and women, and improve living standards across the state.

“The time has come for the administration to refocus its policies and programmes to become genuinely people-centred,” the party said.

It also pledged to support initiatives aimed at easing the hardship facing residents.

“The PDP reiterates its readiness, as a responsible opposition party, to support every genuine effort aimed at addressing the current hardship, hunger and poverty confronting Bayelsans. The party is willing to contribute robust and constructive policy ideas and practical solutions in the overriding interest of the state.”

The opposition further called for stronger institutions, investment in industries with high employment potential and a comprehensive strategy for wealth creation and job generation.

The Bayelsa State Government rejected the criticism, insisting that Governor Diri’s administration has consistently implemented programmes designed to reduce poverty and improve the welfare of residents.

In a separate statement, Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai described the allegations as misleading, saying the administration has invested significantly in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and youth empowerment over the past six years.

She cited projects including the Nembe-Brass Road, the second phase of Glory Drive, the new state secretariat complex and several road and bridge projects as evidence of the government’s commitment to economic development.

The commissioner also highlighted agricultural programmes, including the Bayelsa State Livestock Development Programme and support for cassava and rice farming, which she said are strengthening food production and food security.

Koku-Obiyai added that the government has introduced skills acquisition programmes, grants for small businesses, scholarships and employment initiatives targeting youths and women.

“The claim that nothing has been done to address poverty does not reflect the realities on ground. Governor Douye Diri’s administration has deliberately pursued policies that place the welfare of Bayelsans at the centre of governance,” she said.

She acknowledged that Nigeria’s broader economic challenges continue to affect all states but argued that Bayelsa has worked to cushion the impact through strategic investments and social intervention programmes.

The exchange reflects growing political debate over economic conditions in Bayelsa as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
