Court Stops Rivers Assembly from Writing Chief Judge on Impeachment

A Rivers State High Court has issued an interim injunction stopping the Assembly and Chief Judge from actions linked to Governor Fubara’s impeachment

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and other assembly officials from communicating with the Chief Judge over the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

The order, granted on Friday by Justice F. A. Fiberesima, also barred the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, acting on, or considering any correspondence, resolution, or impeachment request from the lawmakers for the purpose of constituting an investigative panel for seven days.

The ruling followed a motion ex parte filed separately by Governor Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, in Suit Nos. OYHC/7CS/2026 and OYHC/6/CS/2026.

Justice Fiberesima further granted the claimants leave to serve the interim order and originating court processes on the first to the 31st defendants by pasting them at the gate of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters.

The court also directed that the processes be served on the 32nd defendant, the Chief Judge, through any judiciary staff at his chambers within the High Court premises.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the substantive motion.

Despite the court order, the Rivers State House of Assembly reportedly resolved on Friday to continue impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy.
