CUPP calls for INEC compliance with court judgment intensifies as coalition urges INEC to adjust 2027 election timetable after Federal High Court judgment
The Coalition of United Political Parties, Coalition of United Political Parties has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission to immediately comply with a Federal High Court ruling that nullified its deadline for political party activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call followed a judgment delivered on Thursday by Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court, which the coalition said has significantly altered the electoral framework and expanded flexibility for political parties.
In a statement signed by its Acting National Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh, CUPP described the ruling as a landmark decision that enhances internal democracy and strengthens party independence across Nigeria’s political system.
CUPP urges INEC to comply With court ruling centred on the call for the electoral commission to revise its election timetable in line with the court’s pronouncement without delay.
“The court’s decisions have broadened the democratic framework by providing political parties with increased flexibility in managing their internal matters,” the statement read.
The judgment reportedly includes provisions allowing politicians who lose party primaries to defect and still be validly replaced as candidates, the removal of the 21-day party registration requirement, and the relaxation of strict deadlines governing substitution primaries.
It also affirms that INEC cannot unilaterally impose fixed dates for internal party processes or shorten submission and publication timelines.
CUPP warned that any attempt to appeal the ruling could create unnecessary confusion and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Chief Ameh further disclosed that 14 political parties have agreed to extend their internal election timetables to accommodate new entrants and ensure broader participation in candidate selection.

The coalition maintained that the judgment represents a major step towards safeguarding aspirants’ rights and promoting inclusiveness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
