PDP chieftain Dan Ulasi criticises Nyesom Wike’s Tinubu endorsement, saying it has discouraged party members ahead of the 2027 elections
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Dan Ulasi has criticised the decision of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to openly support President Bola Tinubu’s bid ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the move as discouraging for members of the opposition party.

Ulasi made the remarks during an interview on ARISE News, where he questioned the appropriateness of Wike declaring support for Tinubu while still holding a prominent position within the PDP.
The PDP chieftain acknowledged Wike’s constitutional right as a Nigerian citizen to support any political candidate of his choice, but argued that such an endorsement from a senior figure associated with an opposition party could send a damaging message to party members and supporters.
“I did say it was wrong for the FCT minister, being the national leader of the PDP, to prematurely declare four months ago for Tinubu, even though he is serving under his government,” Ulasi said.
Ulasi said Wike could have waited until the election period became closer before announcing his political position and explaining his reasons for supporting the President.
According to him, the timing and circumstances surrounding the endorsement have created uncertainty among PDP supporters who are expected to work towards strengthening the party ahead of the next election cycle.
“While nobody can deny Wike the right to support President Tinubu, doing so as a PDP leader is demoralising for members of the party,” Ulasi said.
The comments come amid continued political discussions surrounding Wike’s relationship with the Tinubu administration.
Since his appointment as FCT Minister in 2023, Wike has maintained ties with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government despite remaining formally linked to the PDP.
Wike’s political stance has also been a source of internal debate within the PDP, particularly following the divisions that emerged after the 2023 presidential election.
The party has faced ongoing challenges over leadership direction, internal unity and preparations for the 2027 elections.
