Edo Governor Condemns ADC Violence in Benin City

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo condemns ADC attack in Benin City, calling for internal party disputes to be resolved peacefully

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned violence against African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders in Benin City, describing it as an internal crisis that has been taken too far, in a statement released on 26 February 2026.

The governor accused elements within the ADC of importing thugs under the guise of politics, warning that Edo State would not become a theatre of conflict.

“Even though the precise motive behind this attack may not yet be known, I strongly believe that the ultimate objective is to discredit Edo State and undermine its reputation as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria,” he said.

Okpebholo emphasised the importance of healthy political opposition while cautioning that attempts to foment crisis would not be tolerated.

“All parties must resolve their internal disputes before organising events in the state,” he added.

The ADC described the incident as a gun attack and alleged assassination attempt targeting leaders including former Edo governor John Odigie-Oyegun, ex-Anambra governor Peter Obi, and former Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata.

The party rejected claims linking it to unrest and criticised the governor’s statements as inflammatory.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party would document incidents and pursue legal and international avenues for redress.

Political figures and citizens voiced concern over the attacks. House of Representatives member Peter Ifeanyi Uzokwe called for an independent investigation, describing the attack as an assault on democracy.

Youth groups from Agulu urged Edo State authorities and federal security agencies to strengthen protection of lives and property.

Tensions within the Edo ADC intensified as former Senate Chief Whip Rowland Owie accused Oyegun of sidelining statutory members and convening meetings without due process.

The dispute escalated after a disputed meeting at Oyegun’s Benin residence reportedly degenerated into violence against the residence and party secretariat.
