ADC urges Nigerian government to release El-Rufai or charge him to court, warning of risks to democracy and constitutional rights
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the immediate release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai or his prompt arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction, warning that continued detention could undermine Nigeria’s democratic foundations.

The call was made in a statement by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Wednesday. The party criticised the government of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the handling of El-Rufai’s case raises serious questions about the rule of law and respect for human rights.
“If this is the democratic character of a government seeking another mandate, then Nigerians must ask what becomes of the rule of law and human rights when the Tinubu government no longer needs their votes,” the statement said.
The ADC described the situation as “a stain on the conscience of our democracy and a dangerous descent into lawlessness,” emphasising that freedom is a constitutional right, not a privilege granted by the executive branch.
The party challenged President Tinubu to demonstrate his commitment to the Constitution, warning that failure to do so could erode public trust in governance.

Abdullahi also called on all relevant state officials, including the National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and leadership of the ICPC, to ensure full compliance with constitutional provisions.
