Enugu Forest Guard Leadership ushers experienced officers to secure state

Governor Peter Mbah appoints retired colonel and police chief to lead Enugu Forest Guard, aiming to curb border attacks and protect forests and communities

Enugu Forest Guard Leadership takes a decisive turn today. Governor Peter Mbah has appointed retired Colonel Dan Didiugwu as chairman and retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Olamitisoji Akinbamilayo as commander.

Professor Chidiebere Onyia announced the decision in Enugu, emphasising professionalism in environmental security.

He said the state will benefit from the officers’ proven ability to organise disciplined field teams.

“We are confident in their capacity to lead the Forest Guard,” Onyia said. The appointments answer renewed attacks on border communities that killed at least 16 residents this month.

Didiugwu, once a battalion commander, brings strategic planning expertise from peace keeping missions across West Africa.

Akinbamilayo commanded police units in volatile regions and earned a reputation for swift investigations.

The governor scrapped the post of State Coordinator, giving the new commander full operational control.

The House of Assembly will now vet Didiugwu for confirmation in line with legal requirements.

Community leaders have welcomed the plan, urging the new team to patrol forest corridors more frequently.

Environmental activists also call for satellite tracking and early warning systems to deter poachers and armed herders.
