Fashola Rules Out Presidency as the former Lagos governor says he has no ambition to contest while reflecting on public service and Nigeria’s future
Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, has ruled out contesting for Nigeria’s presidency, saying he has no interest in seeking the country’s highest political office. Fashola made the declaration on Wednesday, 23 July 2026, during an interview on TVC, where he reflected on his years in public service and his hopes for Nigeria’s future.
The statement came after he was asked directly whether he planned to enter the presidential race.
“No,” Fashola replied.
When pressed further on the possibility of a presidential ambition, he responded with humour, saying: “President of what? I’m president at home.”
Fashola described his political journey as a remarkable privilege, saying his years in government had given him an opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s development and inspire younger generations.
“My journey has been an unimaginable privilege, and I hope that it, in some way, inspires another generation about the possibilities of this country,” he said.
The former governor said Nigeria remains a country filled with opportunities, pointing to stories of individuals who have risen from difficult beginnings to achieve success.
Asked how he wanted to be remembered, Fashola said history would ultimately determine his legacy.
“Let history write whatever history wants to write. It is not in my place,” he said.
Fashola also confirmed that he remains a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council, but stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between offering guidance and interfering in government affairs.
“There is a thin line between intervention and interference,” he said.
Beyond his personal political plans, Fashola spoke on national issues, calling for the protection of Nigeria’s judiciary, a stronger opposition system and the establishment of state police.
He also addressed Lagos’ recurring flooding challenges, saying solving the problem requires both government commitment and cooperation from residents.
On economic matters, Fashola expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s fiscal and monetary reforms, acknowledging the complexity of the president’s responsibilities at the national level.
Fashola served as Lagos governor from 2007 to 2015 before becoming Minister of Power, Works and Housing and later Minister of Works under the Federal Government.

His decision not to pursue the presidency removes his name from early speculation surrounding potential contenders ahead of the 2027 elections.
