Hajiya Mariam officially leaves PDP to join APC in Zamfara, pledging service, unity, and development for the state
Hajiya Mariam Usman Shehu Yaro, widely known as Zarar Maru, formally defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State on Sunday, February 9, 2026.

The defection ceremony, held in Maru Local Government Area, was attended by senior APC figures, including former governorship candidate Mukhtar Shehu Idris and Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu, the House of Representatives member for Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency. Leaders from major political blocs in Zamfara, including allies of former Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar and Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, were also present.
Hajiya Mariam Yaro previously served as Managing Director of the Zamfara State Investment and Property Development Company, where she was instrumental in promoting trade, investment, and economic development initiatives across the state.
Addressing her decision to join the APC, she emphasised her renewed commitment to service, unity, and development for the people of Zamfara. “Politics must remain a vehicle for improving lives, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for sustainable growth,” she stated.

Political realignments have continued to intensify in Zamfara State, with several high-profile defections occurring across party lines ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Observers say Hajiya Mariam’s move is part of a broader strategy by the APC to consolidate support in key local government areas.
