INEC Hails Surge in CVR Voter Registration in Enugu State

Enugu CVR Voter Registration Surge as INEC reports increased turnout in Enugu centres, with youths dominating fresh voter registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commended the significant rise in Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) across its registration centres in Enugu State, describing the development as a positive sign of growing civic engagement.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, made the commendation during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Thursday.

Dr Chukwu noted that while earlier stages of the exercise recorded low turnout, recent weeks have witnessed a clear surge in fresh registrants across multiple centres in the state.

According to him, most registration centres now record an average of at least 100 new registrants daily, a sharp increase compared to previous participation levels.

He attributed the development partly to increased public awareness campaigns by stakeholders, civil society organisations and faith-based groups encouraging youth participation in the electoral process.

The REC also observed that a large proportion of new registrants are young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 25, describing their involvement as a positive development for democratic participation.

He noted that the ongoing CVR exercise, which began on August 18, 2025 and is scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, remains a critical pathway for eligible citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Card.

Dr Chukwu explained that voter registration not only enables citizens to participate in elections but also allows them to engage in democratic processes such as recalling underperforming public officials.

He further stated that increased registration figures in polling units could eventually influence the creation of additional polling units, wards and constituencies to improve electoral access.

The INEC official also confirmed collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), ensuring linkage between the Permanent Voter Card and the National Identification Number for improved identity verification.

He described the PVC as a key national document that contains voter information, including polling unit and ward details, which strengthens electoral transparency and accessibility.

Dr Chukwu reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to deepening voter participation and strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of future elections.
