Iyabo Obasanjo Supports Consensus Candidate Selection

Iyabo Obasanjo backs consensus candidates, saying the method ensures electable choices ahead of the 2027 elections

Former Ogun Central senator Iyabo Obasanjo has endorsed the use of consensus in selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general election, stating that the approach produces electable and widely accepted contenders.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday in Abuja, Obasanjo dismissed concerns that consensus could undermine party members’ preferences, insisting that political parties remain guided by popularity and electoral viability.

“I do believe that consensus can bring the right candidates because consensus does not mean that leadership ignores the will of the people,” Obasanjo said.

Obasanjo argued that no political party would risk presenting unpopular candidates, as the primary objective is to secure victory at the polls.

She noted that consensus would naturally favour individuals with strong grassroots support and broad acceptance.

The former lawmaker, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, expressed confidence that the system would work in her favour as she pursues the Ogun State governorship ticket.

Obasanjo highlighted her track record in public service as a compelling advantage, maintaining that she remains a formidable contender in the race.

She also referenced her family’s expected support, including that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, while stressing her independence in making political decisions.

The Electoral Act recognises consensus and direct primaries as valid methods for candidate selection, a framework that continues to shape party strategies ahead of the next election cycle.
