Kabiru Turaki Insists PDP Not Conducting Congresses, dismissing reports as false and accusing expelled members of destabilising the party

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, National Chairman of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, on Monday declared that the party is not conducting congresses anywhere in Nigeria, dismissing circulating reports as false and destabilising.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Kabiru Turaki insisted that no state chapter of the party had been authorised to hold congresses.

Kabiru Turaki Insists PDP Not Conducting Congresses, he stressed, warning members and the public to disregard what he described as deliberate misinformation.

“Our members and the general public are hereby notified that our party is not conducting congresses in any part of the country,” he said.

Kabiru Turaki alleged that the reports were being promoted by expelled members who had aligned themselves with the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He accused those individuals of attempting to weaken the opposition and undermine multiparty democracy.

“The false information is being circulated by expelled members of our party, who now have clearly shown their unrelenting appendages to the All Progressives Congress,” he stated, describing the situation as a calculated move to derail the party’s future.

Kabiru Turaki further claimed that some former members had prioritised personal political gain over party unity, alleging they had sought favours from the presidency and the APC in exchange for loyalty.

The clarification comes amid intensifying factional disputes within the PDP. A separate bloc backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has maintained that its planned national convention scheduled for 29 and 30 March will proceed despite ongoing litigation.

That camp, led by acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, has said the Independent National Electoral Commission has been formally notified of its proposed convention.

However, the Makinde aligned faction headed by Kabiru Turaki has rejected the legitimacy of those plans, arguing that the rival group lacks the authority to organise congresses or a national convention on behalf of the party.

In a notable development, Kabiru Turaki emphasised that the party’s current focus is on a digital membership registration drive, which he described as progressing well.

He assured members that the leadership would continue to provide updates as internal reforms unfold.

The dispute underscores a volatile chapter in the PDP’s history, with competing claims to leadership threatening to reshape the party’s structure ahead of future electoral contests.
