Kano Commissioner Urges Deputy Governor to Resign

Kano Information Commissioner Ibrahim Waiya urges Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to resign over political misalignment with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf

Ibrahim Waiya, Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, has called on Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to resign, citing his refusal to defect to the All Progressives Congress alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Waiya made the remarks on Thursday, January 29, during an interaction with journalists in Kano.

Waiya argued that trust and confidentiality are central to effective governance and expressed concern that the deputy governor’s political stance compromised executive cohesion.

“In government, things are done based on trust, and you can’t trust someone who is not with you,” he said.

The commissioner warned that continued participation in executive decision-making by an official with a different political alignment was inappropriate.

The call for resignation follows Governor Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC, alongside several state and federal lawmakers.

Waiya described the governor’s move as a strategic step that would strengthen Kano State’s access to federal programmes and development initiatives, promising tangible benefits for residents.

Waiya suggested that resignation would be the most dignified option for Gwarzo, framing it as a principled decision rather than punitive. “If I were him, I would humbly resign,” he stated.

The commissioner emphasised that political loyalty within the executive is not symbolic but essential to handling sensitive policies and state matters.

Addressing broader state issues, Waiya also commented on the unresolved emirate dispute, assuring that the administration remains committed to dialogue, adherence to the rule of law, and maintaining peace.

He said political differences should not disrupt governance or undermine the collective interests of Kano residents.

The deputy governor has yet to respond publicly to the commissioner’s remarks.
