The Kano State Government has directed all public office holders intending to contest the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The Kano officials resignation directive for the 2027 elections was issued in a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim.

The circular, dated March 24, 2026, was addressed to commissioners, special advisers, directors-general and other senior political appointees across the state.
According to the directive, affected officials must step down if they plan to participate in the upcoming elections in order to comply with existing electoral laws.
The state government said the decision aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 governing the conduct of public office holders in partisan politics.
It explained that the move is intended to uphold neutrality, accountability and integrity within the civil service structure.
The circular specifically referenced Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026 as the legal basis for the order.
“All public officers who are interested in contesting in the forthcoming general elections are requested to resign or retire as the case may be on or before Tuesday, 31st March 2026,” the statement read.
The government also urged strict compliance and wide circulation of the directive among all relevant authorities.
Political observers say the development could significantly reshape early preparations for the 2027 election cycle in Kano State.
