Kwankwaso Hosts NDC Leaders Amid 2027 Political Talks

Rabiu Kwankwaso hosts NDC leaders in Abuja as discussions over party alignment and 2027 coalition politics intensify ahead of elections

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, on Monday hosted leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at his residence in Abuja, in a meeting that has intensified speculation over emerging political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The delegation included Mohammed Bakin, the party’s National Vice Chairman for the North-West, among other senior figures, according to party sources familiar with the engagement.

Reports indicate that the NDC delegation used the meeting to formally invite Kwankwaso to consider joining the party as part of broader realignment efforts ahead of the next election cycle.

In recent weeks, political discussions have increasingly centred on possible coalition arrangements involving Kwankwaso and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, amid speculation of a possible joint political platform.

Supporters of both politicians recently launched a group known as the “OK Movement,” aimed at mobilising support for potential collaboration ahead of 2027.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress continues to face internal leadership disputes that could affect its organisational stability going into the next election cycle.

On April 22, the Supreme Court reserved judgement in a case involving rival factions within the party, led by former Senate President David Mark and Nafiu Bala, further deepening uncertainty over its leadership structure.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed May 30, 2026, as the deadline for political parties to submit candidate lists and complete nomination processes.

However, several opposition parties, including the ADC, factions of the PDP, and the NNPP, have called for an extension, citing concerns over the tight timetable.

Political analysts say the ongoing engagements and internal disputes across opposition parties reflect a broader period of realignment and strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
