Keyamo Says Kwankwaso Faces Tight Political Corner Ahead of 2027

Keyamo says former Kano governor Kwankwaso faces a tight political corner with limited options for his 2027 presidential bid

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has “boxed himself into one of the tightest corners in his political career” over his refusal or indecision to accept an earlier political olive branch from the All Progressives Congress.

Keyamo, in a statement, said he had “always admired Engr. Mohammed Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso from a distance,” but argued that recent political developments have left the former governor facing a narrowing set of choices ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to the minister, Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition is at the centre of his current dilemma.

He noted that major parties such as the APC and PDP are focused on southern candidates, while the NNPP remains largely a one-state party, limiting Kwankwaso’s national reach.

“Kwankwaso wants to be President, but none of the major political parties will pick him as a candidate in 2027. APC & PDP are going South & ADC’s ticket is Atiku’s to lose… NNPP is still a one-State Party, and with recent defections, it is doubtful if it can maintain its grip on Kano,” Keyamo stated.

The minister added that Kwankwaso is unlikely to support a northern presidential candidate in 2027, as it would undermine his own ambition.

He predicted that 2031 may present the most realistic window for the former governor, depending on alliances he forms in 2027.

Keyamo outlined Kwankwaso’s potential options: returning to the PDP, joining the APC, or pursuing the Labour Party only if Peter Obi were to run with him as vice-president though the latter option is highly unlikely.

Each scenario, he argued, comes with significant limitations.

“From the scenarios above, Kwankwaso is in a very difficult political crossroads. The decision he makes now may retire him permanently from politics or revive his Presidential ambition,” Keyamo concluded.
