Kwara PDP Unveils Deputy Governorship Candidate for 2027

Kwara PDP unveils its deputy governorship candidate for 2027, strengthening its election ticket ahead of the state governorship race

The Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State has formally announced Reverend Cornelius Fawenu as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 general election, marking a key step in the party’s preparations for the upcoming poll in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Kwara State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olusegun Adewara, following what the party described as extensive consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The decision positions Fawenu alongside the governorship candidate, Bolakale Kawu, as the party seeks to present a unified front ahead of the election.

Reverend Cornelius Fawenu, a native of Babaloma in Ifelodun Local Government Area, currently serves as the Kwara South Senatorial Chairman of the PDP. His selection, according to the party, followed a rigorous internal screening process involving multiple aspirants and consultations with key stakeholders.

Bolakale Kawu, the PDP governorship candidate, described Fawenu as a trusted partner in the party’s renewed push for electoral success. “Rev. Fawenu is a man of proven integrity, humility, compassion and exceptional leadership whose emergence reflects our commitment to inclusive governance,” Kawu said.

Party leaders said the choice of Fawenu was influenced by his background in religious leadership and community development.

A graduate of Biochemistry from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Fawenu is also the Presiding Pastor of Oasis of Wisdom Bible Church in Ilorin and a former official of the Christian Association of Nigeria.

The PDP added that the Kawu-Fawenu ticket was designed to balance competence, grassroots influence and religious diversity, which it believes will strengthen its appeal across Kwara State.

The party further stated that the decision reflects a broader strategy aimed at rebuilding public trust and positioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of 2027.

Political observers note that the unveiling of the deputy governorship candidate is part of a wider pattern of early positioning by major parties as Nigeria’s political landscape gradually shifts towards the next general election cycle.

The PDP, meanwhile, says it remains confident that its ticket will resonate with voters seeking change in state leadership.
