Labour Party Criticises Ogun 2026 Budget as Unsustainable

Labour Party criticises Ogun State’s ₦1.68tn 2026 budget as unsustainable, pledges full electoral contest in 2027 but supports Tinubu’s re-election

The Labour Party has criticised the proposed ₦1.68 trillion 2026 budget of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, describing it as unsustainable and potentially harmful to the state’s long-term economic well-being.

Speaking during the inauguration of the newly elected executive members of the party’s Ogun State chapter at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Centre, Iwe Iroyin, Abeokuta, South-West Vice-Chairman Abayomi Arabambi condemned the size and structure of the proposed budget.

“We urge the Ogun State House of Assembly to exercise its constitutional duty with utmost diligence,” Arabambi said.

“It should consider moderating the budget’s growth to a more sustainable level, demand a clear, credible and conservative financing plan that reduces dependency on volatile and debt-based sources, and ensure that every proposed project undergoes rigorous independent assessment.”

The Labour Party official argued that the budget, tagged Budget of Sustainable Legacy, reflects poor fiscal judgment.

Governor Abiodun recently proposed a total expenditure of ₦1,668,997,993,125.44 for the 2026 fiscal year, representing a 63 per cent increase from the 2025 budget of ₦1.054 trillion.

Recurrent expenditure is projected at ₦624.76 billion (37 per cent), while capital expenditure is slated at ₦1.044 trillion (63 per cent).

Arabambi accused the current administration of failing Ogun residents, arguing that policies have not delivered meaningful socio-economic improvements.

“What is being presented as a ₦1.6 trillion budget cannot be regarded as a sustainable legacy. A genuine legacy must be rooted in fiscal responsibility, transparent governance and expenditure that aligns with secure and verifiable revenue,” he said.

The Labour Party also declared that it would not form alliances with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting it would field candidates for all elective positions in the state.

However, the party clarified that it would support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Meanwhile, newly elected state chairman Mrs Oluwabukola Soyoye thanked party members for their confidence and pledged to mobilise more people into the party to offer a people-centred alternative in 2027.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Ogun State Government were unsuccessful, with calls and messages to the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade, remaining unanswered at the time of filing.
