Lagos APC Dismisses Atiku’s Democracy Alarm Claims

Lagos APC rejects Atiku Abubakar’s claims of democracy under threat, calling them alarmist and reaffirming Nigeria’s democratic resilience

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar that Nigeria’s democracy is facing an “existential threat.”

The party described the statements as “alarmist” and accused the opposition of seeking relevance amid declining political influence.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Ogba, APC spokesman Seye Oladejo said, “Coming from a political tendency that has repeatedly tested, stretched and strained democratic institutions, this sudden affection for democracy is as ironic as it is convenient.”

The party specifically criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggesting that the coalition is “unsure of its ideological footing, uncertain of its leadership direction and plainly afraid of its own shadow.”

Oladejo argued that since May 29, 2023, democratic institutions in Nigeria have continued to function, with elections conducted, courts adjudicating disputes, and citizens exercising their constitutional freedoms.

According to the statement, “What we are witnessing is not the defence of democracy, but the last convulsion of a political arrangement held together by fear, impatience and the fading relevance of its leading lights.”

The APC reaffirmed that the country’s democracy remains resilient under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that ongoing reforms are rooted in constitutional order, the rule of law, and democratic accountability.

Oladejo further stated that the opposition’s “alarmist rhetoric” reflects frustration at lost political influence rather than a genuine threat to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“Nigeria is not afraid. Democracy is not collapsing. It is only the opposition that is frightened by its own shadow,” he said.
