MURIC Applauds Muslim Candidates in Osun 2026 Gubernatorial Race

MURIC applauds APC and ADC for Muslim candidates in Osun 2026 elections, urging Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo to promote Muslim political representation

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended the All Progressives Congress (APC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) for producing Muslim candidates in the 2026 Osun State gubernatorial election.

The Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, highlighted the significance of the move in a statement, noting that the parties recognised the majority Muslim demographic in the state.

“MURIC applauds the leadership of the two political parties in Osun State for recognising the need to give Muslims leadership roles in governance,” the statement said.

Prof. Akintola also urged political parties in other South West states, particularly Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo, to emulate Osun’s example to ensure the full political inclusion of Muslims.

He stressed that Yoruba Muslims have experienced neglect and marginalisation in the current political dispensation at both federal and state levels.

The group further called for Muslim gubernatorial candidates in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo, while recommending deputy governorship positions for Muslims in Ondo and Ekiti states.

MURIC lamented that since 2023, all six states in the South West have Christian governors, which they said represents a monopoly of power and exclusion of Muslim communities.

“MURIC asserts that Yoruba Muslims are fellow countrymen, not second-class citizens, and demands equal rights, equity, and justice in the political administration of the South West,” the statement concluded.
