Mutfwang’s APC Defection Sparks Development Hope in Plateau

Mutfwang’s APC defection boosts federal collaboration, grassroots support and development in Plateau State

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move he says will strengthen security, development and political alignment ahead of the 2027 elections.

The announcement comes amid rising national attention on Plateau’s relative peace and economic potential.

In a detailed interview, Mutfwang attributed the state’s stability to proactive intelligence gathering, community engagement, and strong collaboration with federal security agencies.

“We’ve been fortunate to have credible, actionable intelligence that helps us nip potential threats in the bud. Relationships with communities and empowered security agencies have made a difference,” he said.

Asked about his shift from PDP to APC, Mutfwang explained that a combination of political instability within his former party and direct engagement by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu influenced his decision.

“From September, PDP began to wobble seriously. I had to reassess my platform for 2027, and APC emerged as the most viable option,” he said.

The governor highlighted the benefits of his new alignment, including enhanced federal support for infrastructure and agricultural projects.

Mutfwang pointed to the Akwanga-Jos road project, livestock development initiatives, and new recruitment for the Plateau Forest Service as key priorities.

“These interventions will not only drive economic growth but also help return internally displaced persons to their communities,” he added.

On harmonising APC structures within the state, Mutfwang stressed inclusivity and collaboration, noting the support of former Governor Simon Lalong and other local leaders.

“Leadership is not winner-takes-all. We are accommodating all stakeholders and continuing grassroots engagement to energise our base,” he said.

Addressing concerns about voter support, Mutfwang said Plateau citizens have demonstrated rational political judgement in the past and will back decisions aligned with their interests.

“It’s not about party membership; it’s about voter support. The grassroots have been receptive to our reasoning,” he explained.

Mutfwang also assured continuity in governance and electoral prospects, noting strong indications from APC leadership that first-term governors will generally secure a second-term ticket.

He described Plateau as a strategic political asset, with potential to influence over 10 million votes in the Middle Belt.

Concluding on a note of reconciliation, Mutfwang praised the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe, for his endorsement.

“Conflict will not deliver votes; collaboration will. His support energises our base and ensures a positive path forward for Plateau and Nigeria’s political landscape,” he said.
