Maku Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Disrupt Nasarawa Bye-Election

Labaran Maku alleges plans to compromise the Nasarawa North bye-election, warning of possible manipulation and calling for security neutrality

Labour Party senatorial candidate for Nasarawa North, Labaran Maku, on Wednesday raised concerns over what he described as a possible plot to compromise the June 20 bye-election in parts of the district.

Speaking at a press conference in Akpata, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, the former Minister of Information alleged that nine wards in Nasarawa Eggon had been marked for possible electoral interference due to their high voter population and perceived support for the Labour Party.

Maku claimed that some political actors were uncomfortable with the rising popularity of his candidacy and were allegedly exploring ways to influence the outcome of the election.

He said the Labour Party enjoys strong grassroots backing across Nasarawa Eggon, Akwanga and Wamba local government areas, expressing confidence ahead of the poll.

“We have credible information suggesting moves to interfere with the electoral process because some people have realized that the electorate is determined to vote for change,” Maku said.

The Labour Party candidate warned that there were alleged plans to deploy political thugs to disrupt voting in strategic areas, cautioning that such actions could heighten tension and undermine confidence in the electoral process.

He called on federal authorities and security agencies to maintain neutrality and resist any form of political pressure that could affect the credibility of the election.

Maku also expressed concern over reported redeployment of senior security officials in the state, suggesting that the development mirrors past contentious election periods.

He further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of imposing what he described as an unpopular candidate through a non-transparent primary process.

Despite his allegations, Maku maintained confidence in his chances, stating that voters in Nasarawa North consistently prioritise competence, credibility and performance over party affiliation.

He urged residents to remain peaceful, vigilant and committed to a free and fair electoral process as preparations intensify ahead of the bye-election.
