The Nigeria Democratic Congress says it is open to coalition discussions ahead of the 2027 election while hoping to rally support behind its candidates
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated openness to forming a political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties begin early consultations and strategic positioning for the next electoral cycle.

The party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, made the position known during an interview on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, on Sunday, 29 June 2026, where he said the NDC remains willing to engage in discussions with other opposition groups.
“As an opposition leader, we will be open. Our party, the NDC, will be open to conversations within that space,” Dickson said.
Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State and serving senator, however stressed that discussions around any coalition structure were still at a preliminary stage, noting that no conclusions should be assumed at this point.
He said the party was optimistic that any eventual alignment would strengthen its political standing, while also expressing confidence that the NDC would play a central role in any emerging opposition arrangement.
According to him, the party is not seeking dominance over other political groups but expects post-nomination negotiations to shape how opposition forces may collaborate ahead of the polls.
“We are not claiming superiority. After nominations, we will move into another phase of discussions,” he added.
The comments come amid increasing political realignments ahead of 2027, as parties explore potential alliances in response to Nigeria’s evolving electoral landscape.
However, the NDC continues to face legal uncertainty following a recent Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside an earlier judgment that directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the party.
The development has added a layer of complexity to the party’s political ambitions, even as it continues to participate in broader opposition conversations.

Political observers say early coalition discussions are likely to intensify in the coming months as parties position themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election cycle.
