NDC Sues INEC Over Exclusion of Kano Governorship Candidate

NDC sues INEC over the exclusion of Kano governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, asking a court to order his inclusion on the candidates’ list

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the exclusion of its Kano State governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from the list of candidates published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The party is asking the court to compel INEC to include Gwarzo’s name on the list, arguing that he has fulfilled the requirements to contest the forthcoming governorship election.

Yusuf Kofarmata, an NDC chieftain associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement, disclosed the legal action and urged party supporters to remain hopeful while awaiting the court’s decision.

Kofarmata expressed confidence that the court would rule in the party’s favour, paving the way for Gwarzo to participate in the governorship race despite his absence from the published list.

The lawsuit comes amid uncertainty over the NDC’s participation in the Kano governorship election, with the party seeking judicial intervention to resolve the dispute with the electoral commission.

The party maintains that its candidate should be given the opportunity to contest, insisting that his exclusion should be addressed through the legal process.

However, details of the suit, including the specific grounds on which the party is challenging INEC’s decision, the additional reliefs sought and the date fixed for hearing, were not provided in the available information.

INEC’s reasons for omitting Gwarzo’s name from the list were also not stated.

The commission’s response and the court’s eventual decision are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the exclusion and determine the next steps in the dispute.
