Nigeria 2027 Opposition Politics, Presidential Ambitions Stall Opposition Coalition’s Choice of Party for 2027 Elections

Nigeria 2027 opposition politics shows struggles to pick a party as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi’s conflicting ambitions stall unity.

Efforts to form a united opposition coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 are faltering as conflicting presidential ambitions among key political heavyweights threaten to derail progress.

According to findings by THISDAY, the coalition, made up of influential political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, has failed to agree on the political party under which it will contest the 2027 general election.

A crucial meeting initially scheduled for 30 May 2025 was aborted as consensus could not be reached.

The adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), backed by Atiku, former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, ex-Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and ex-Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The registration of a new political platform, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), strongly pushed by Amaechi and the League of Northern Democrats (LND).

But deep-seated political ambition—particularly around the 2027 presidency—has effectively stalled further progress.

Sources close to the discussions revealed that Atiku’s camp made overtures to draft Obi as his running mate, but the idea was reportedly rejected due to ongoing regional zoning sentiments, especially the prevailing belief that the presidency should remain in the South after President Tinubu’s term, in keeping with the North-South rotation.

“Obi is viewed as the natural Southern contender,” a source explained, adding that potential South-East allies like Emeka Ihedioha and Osita Chidoka are wary of publicly working against Obi, fearing political backlash.

The coalition has all the right elements for change—but unless personal ambition gives way to collective interest, it may end before it truly begins.

Atiku, faced with limited Southern options, is said to have considered Amaechi, though many in his camp view that strategy as risky and potentially divisive.

On the other hand, Obi’s camp is reportedly open to partnerships if Atiku withdraws his ambition and backs a Southern presidency, possibly making way for a Northern running mate such as Governor Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Governor Lawal (Zamfara), or Senator Aminu Tambuwal.

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is also reported to be under intense pressure from political stakeholders advocating for the South to retain the presidency.

Public responses have been mixed. Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, downplayed the friction, insisting, “We are at the foundation level of the coalition… there is no need to jump the gun. When we get to the bridge, we shall cross it.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Peter Obi, while declining official comment, confirmed the Labour Party candidate was still watching the unfolding events closely: “Obi is a member of the Labour Party at least for now. He is also involved in the coalition. We are watching the developments and will speak out when the time is right.”

However, Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, was more candid: “We are almost at a crossroads because of the hidden agenda of the political ambitions of our main promoters and their supporters. We hope to sort them out soon.”

The failure to unite under a single platform so far underscores the deep ideological and strategic divisions that may ultimately hinder efforts to mount a formidable challenge against President Tinubu in 2027.
