Northern Strategists Weigh Replacing Shettima Ahead of 2027

Northern Nigerian strategists consider replacing Kashim Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate in 2027 amid US concerns over religious balance

Political strategists and opinion leaders in Northern Nigeria are reportedly exploring the replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 general elections.

Sources say the discussion was partly influenced by the United States, raising questions about Nigeria’s 2023 “Muslim-Muslim” presidential ticket.

The arrangement, in which Tinubu paired with Shettima, faced opposition from some Christian leaders.

Tensions over the Muslim-Muslim ticket had eased after Tinubu’s campaigns emphasised religious tolerance and regional harmony, particularly in the southwest.

According to The Tribune, the Trump administration believes Nigeria requires a symbol of religious harmony at the national leadership level.

While some argue this may mask deeper intentions, Northern political stakeholders are reportedly considering the suggestion seriously.

Among Christian figures proposed as Shettima’s replacement was Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese.

However, sources indicate he was rejected for being “politically exposed,” particularly due to his role on the national peace committee and outspoken positions on national issues.

Other names under consideration include General Christopher Musa, Minister of Defence, and Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The potential change in Shettima’s candidacy comes amid broader political manoeuvres in the north.

President Tinubu recently met Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf amid defection rumours, though the former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso denies endorsing any switch.
