Osun APC, Accord Clash Over Security Donations Row

In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC said protection of lives and property should remain the core responsibility of all tiers of government.

The party faulted recent comments by the Accord Party, which criticised local government efforts to support security agencies in Osun State.

The APC described the condemnation of council chairmen for donating operational vehicles to the police as “uncalled for, frivolous and ill-motivated.”

It maintained that the local government officials acted within their responsibilities to support security agencies in tackling crime.

“It is surprising that a ruling party would condemn efforts aimed at strengthening security operations in the state,” Olabisi said.

The party argued that the initiative was aimed at improving policing capacity and enhancing the protection of residents across the state.

It further suggested that the criticism stemmed from what it described as discomfort with exposure of alleged governance gaps.

“We observe that the concern of the Accord Party is not about the policy itself but the fact that it highlights gaps in the priorities of the current administration,” the statement added.

The APC insisted that security should not be politicised, stressing the need for collaboration among political actors to combat crime effectively.

It also maintained that the reinstated council officials remain legally recognised pending the conclusion of ongoing judicial processes.

“The council executives remain the duly elected representatives until all judicial processes, including those at the Supreme Court, are concluded,” Olabisi stated.

The party urged the state government and other stakeholders to focus on strengthening security rather than engaging in political disputes over law enforcement support initiatives.

However, the Accord Party, in a statement by its chairman Pastor Victor Akande, warned the Osun State Police Command against accepting the donated vehicles from the court-sacked council chairmen of the APC.

The party alleged that the donations were linked to diverted local government funds and described them as proceeds of illegality.

It also urged the Inspector-General of Police Inspector-General of Police Nigeria to intervene and stop what it called attempts to compromise the police through questionable donations.

The Accord Party further stated that the matter was already before the courts, with some officials reportedly standing trial over alleged financial misconduct involving local government funds.
