Osun APC alleges attacks on members after election

Osun APC alleges 10 members were injured in Iree after the election and calls for a full investigation into reported attacks and property damage

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, led by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, alleged that at least 10 APC members and supporters were injured in Iree, Boripe Local Government Area, following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 governorship election.

The party said the alleged attacks were carried out by suspected supporters of the Accord Party, with several properties reportedly damaged in the aftermath of the election.

According to the APC, some of the alleged victims have been receiving medical treatment in Iree and neighbouring communities since Sunday.

The party identified the reported victims as Ige Kayode, Oyeniyi Segun, Oladosu Yinka, Sobalaje Ibraheem and Peter Korede Adejare, among others.

“The attacks followed the announcement of the governorship election results,” the APC said in a statement signed by Olabisi.

The party further alleged that Iree’s major motor park was demolished and that business premises belonging to some of its members were attacked.

The APC also alleged that a video circulating online showed Oba Muritala Oyelakin, whom the party referred to as the Aree of Iree, questioning one of the alleged victims at his residence.

The allegations come against a particularly sensitive political backdrop in Iree. In July, APC leaders in the community rejected an endorsement of Adeleke for a second term by Oyelakin, arguing that the monarch’s position did not represent the wider community.

The Osun State Government, however, had earlier reported that Iree community leaders, led by Oyelakin, endorsed Adeleke’s re-election in July, citing infrastructure projects including the rehabilitation of township roads and the Iree-Ada road.

The traditional institution itself has also been the subject of a prolonged legal dispute. An Osun State High Court ruling in 2024 restrained the state government from formally presenting a staff of office to Oyelakin pending determination of a substantive case. A related appeal is scheduled for hearing on December 3, 2026.

The latest claims also follow accusations of violence from rival political camps during the election period. On August 14, the Accord Party alleged that suspected APC-linked attackers had targeted its supporters in several parts of Osun, including Iree, where it claimed that people were injured and the Aree’s palace was attacked.

The competing allegations underline the tense atmosphere surrounding the election, with both political camps having previously accused supporters of the other side of violence.

The Osun APC said a petition by counsel representing the affected members, Abiodun Olaide, had been forwarded to the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibraheem Gotan.

The party named Gbadamosi Ibraheem, popularly known as Gbedu Lasisi Oyekanmi Bintin Laye, and other suspects it said were at large. The allegations have not been independently established, and the accused would be entitled to due process if formal investigations or prosecutions follow.

The APC also alleged that some injured members were taken to the traditional ruler’s palace and questioned about alleged connections to APC leaders.

The party has called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and prosecute anyone found responsible.

“Political differences must not become a justification for violence, intimidation or the destruction of means of livelihoods of the people,” the party said.

The allegations place renewed attention on the need for calm in Iree as Osun adjusts to the outcome of a closely contested election.

The APC’s claims, alongside earlier accusations from Accord, make an impartial investigation particularly important in establishing what happened and who was responsible.
