INEC Praises ICPC, NSCDC Over Credible Osun Elections

INEC in Osun State praises ICPC and NSCDC roles in reducing vote buying and election violence ahead of the 2026 governorship poll

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State under the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, has commended the roles of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in improving electoral integrity and reducing malpractice in the state.

Mrs Babalola made the remarks in Osogbo on Tuesday during courtesy visits to both agencies as part of preparations for the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

She said the ICPC had played a strategic role in tackling vote buying and promoting transparency in previous elections, describing its contribution as critical to maintaining credible electoral processes.

According to her, the fight against vote buying requires more than enforcement alone, stressing the need for voter education and sustained public sensitisation.

“We believe that vote buying requires reorientation and not just arrests. The fight is a collective effort,” she said, calling for stronger collaboration between INEC and relevant institutions.

Mrs Babalola also praised the NSCDC for its support in reducing electoral violence and securing electoral materials and personnel during elections.

She noted that the corps had consistently provided security coverage across local government areas, particularly during voter registration exercises, ensuring a safer electoral environment.

In response, ICPC officials acknowledged INEC’s central role in democratic processes while warning that vote buying has evolved beyond direct cash exchanges, extending to indirect inducements in some communities.

The agency called for enhanced synergy among stakeholders and increased public awareness campaigns to address the root causes of electoral malpractice.

Similarly, the Osun State Command of the NSCDC assured INEC of continued support ahead of the 2026 poll, promising enhanced deployment of personnel and collaboration with other security agencies.

Commandant Igbalawole Sotiyo reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting democratic processes, warning that any violation of electoral laws would be met with strict enforcement.

He added that national headquarters had pledged additional reinforcement to strengthen operations during the election period.
