Senator Oyelola Ashiru announces 2027 Kwara governorship bid, highlighting experience, service, and vision for improved governance and welfare
Deputy Senate Leader Oyelola Y. Ashiru has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.

Ashiru, an architect and lawmaker representing Kwara South in the Senate, made the announcement at his Offa residence while receiving executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State.
Ashiru emphasised that his decision stems from a desire to serve the people and advance good governance, citing his extensive experience in the state’s political landscape.
“I have what it takes to govern the state creditably, and I believe that I understand the people and politics in the state because I’ve been here longer than any contestant,” he said.
The senator outlined his readiness to present himself as a candidate for public choice, stressing that leadership is earned through service rather than entitlement.
“The best thing is to give everybody a chance to choose the best leader. Power is not served on a plate; you struggle for it. You present yourself for it,” he said.
Ashiru also addressed perceived regional and religious considerations in Kwara politics.
He noted that prior governors, regardless of origin or faith, have successfully held office in the state.
“It doesn’t really matter whether you are a Christian or from Ilorin. What matters is preparation, competence, and commitment to serve,” he added.
The deputy Senate leader expressed confidence that prayer and determination will guide his campaign.

“In anything you are doing, prayer is very important. I believe God will answer my prayers, and I will do very well,” Ashiru said.
