Ibadan Muslim Emerges as Favoured Oyo 2027 Governorship Candidate

Opinion polls indicate an Ibadan Muslim as the favoured candidate for Oyo 2027 governorship, citing inclusivity, balance, and local development

As the 2027 Oyo State governorship race heats up, opinion polls suggest a growing preference for an Ibadan-born Muslim as the next governor, with residents emphasising religious tolerance, inclusivity, and local representation.

Recent surveys conducted among indigenes and residents highlight a strong call for a candidate rooted in Ibadanland who has contributed meaningfully to the city and the state.

Respondents noted that the individual need not be a high-profile politician, citing Governor Seyi Makinde’s emergence as a precedent.

Support for this preference reportedly spans a wide range of stakeholders, including market leaders, transport operators, traditional rulers such as Mogajis, Baales, and chiefs, as well as prominent sons and daughters of Ibadanland and influential political figures.

Advocates argue that considering Oyo State’s political history, a Muslim governor would sustain the balance of religious representation.

Previous governors have included Lam Adesina (Muslim), Rashidi Ladoja (Muslim), Adebayo Alao-Akala (Christian), Abiola Ajimobi (Muslim), and the current governor, Seyi Makinde (Christian).

Supporters maintain that this rotation has contributed to inclusivity and stability.

The polls also underscore the need for a leader who appreciates Ibadan’s cultural heritage and has demonstrated commitment to state development.

Political observers predict that discussions around zoning and religious considerations will intensify as the 2027 elections approach, particularly as more aspirants declare their intentions.

While the surveys offer insight into public sentiment, the final decision rests with voters, following primaries conducted by political parties to select official candidates.

Stakeholders have emphasised that unity, development, and local representation should remain central to the electorate’s considerations in choosing Oyo State’s next leader.
