Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice Chairman of PDP, Southeast, Ali Odefa, urged the new committee to “keep the flag flying” and resist internal and external forces allegedly seeking to destabilize the party.
He claimed that for over a year, the party had faced “anti-democratic forces” and noted that ongoing legal disputes over leadership have been consolidated at the Court of Appeal, with judgment reserved.
Mr. Ikpegbu Emeka-Yello, the newly appointed chairman of the Abia Caretaker Committee, was described by Odefa as experienced, fearless, and capable of navigating a challenging political environment.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Ikpegbu Emeka-Yello characterised the appointment as “a call to service, sacrifice and selfless leadership.”
He acknowledged that the PDP in Abia had experienced a serious leadership crisis in recent years, weakening party structures and morale, but emphasized reconciliation as the central mission of the caretaker committee.
The move, however, has faced opposition from the Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the PDP in Abia, which described the committee as illegal.
The disagreement underscores ongoing factional tensions within the state chapter of the party.

Observers note that the caretaker committee will face a delicate balancing act in restoring unity, rebuilding trust, and preparing the party for future electoral contests in the state.
