PDP chieftain Umar Sani describes Federal High Court ruling nullifying Ibadan convention as abuse of power and judicial overreach
Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has criticised the Federal High Court’s ruling nullifying the party’s National Convention in Ibadan, calling it an abuse of power and judicial overreach.

In a statement posted on his verified X account on Tuesday, Sani argued that the judgment delivered by Justice Uche Agomoh raises serious legal and institutional questions beyond the immediate party dispute.
He claimed the court ventured into matters not placed before it, including the legality of a National Caretaker Committee that did not exist when the suit was filed.
“The matter before the court was narrow and specific. The sole relief sought was an order compelling INEC to list the Turaki-led PDP on its portal,” Sani said.
“Yet the judgment went far beyond granting or denying mandamus and delved into internal party administration.”
Sani further alleged that the applicants had previously approached Justice Joyce Abdulmalik seeking identical reliefs.
When that outcome was unfavourable, they returned to a court of coordinate jurisdiction instead of pursuing the appeal, a move he described as “an invitation to a court to sit on appeal over another court of equal standing,” which he said should have been rejected.

He warned that the judgment exposes concerns over perceptions that the Federal High Court has become susceptible to extraneous influences, highlighting broader implications for legal and institutional integrity.
