Peter Obi 2027 campaign: the NDC candidate says he will quit if anyone proves he took diaspora money during his United States visit
Mr Peter Gregory Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, said in the United States on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, that he would end his Peter Obi 2027 campaign if anyone produced proof that he had collected money from Nigerians abroad on the current trip.

The former Anambra State governor used the remark to reject claims that the visit was a fundraising tour.
Mr Peter Obi said: “People are saying that on my current trip to America, I have gone there to collect money from Nigerians in the diaspora. If anyone can show me one person in America who gave me even one dollar, I will end my 2027 campaign. I am using my own resources and paying all my bills, I am running around the world, trying to do the right thing.”
A separate statement issued after a meeting with young Nigerian professionals in Washington, D.C., struck a different note.
There Mr Peter Obi argued that citizens overseas should be able to return, invest and take part in national development. “We must build a Nigeria where our young people do not have to leave their country in order to fulfil their dreams, and where those already abroad can confidently return, invest, contribute and participate in our national development,” he said.
The two messages sit side by side. One denies taking campaign cash on this tour. The other treats the diaspora as a long-term national asset.
That distinction matters because Obi-aligned groups abroad have, in earlier months, openly urged fundraising, chapter-building and voter mobilisation for 2027.
A Sweden-based NDC coordinator, Pharm. Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, told supporters in June that Nigerians overseas should help fund structures and advocacy. Mr Peter Obi’s Tuesday dare was narrower: not that the diaspora must stay silent, but that he personally had not taken a dollar on this American swing.
The challenge fits a pattern. In recent days Mr Peter Obi has offered similar forfeits. He told an interview audience he would leave the race if any of his academic certificates proved false.
He also said he would stop campaigning if records contradicted his claim that he left about ₦2.1 billion in a First Bank ecological fund account when he handed over Anambra in 2014, and that due salaries, pensions and processed contractor bills were cleared. Those are political wagers, not court findings.
Anambra officials have said the state is still servicing loans from previous administrations, including those of Mr Peter Obi and Mr Willie Obiano. The former governor rejects that reading of his own books.
Context around the ticket is unsettled in other ways. Mr Peter Obi ran for president on the Labour Party ticket in 2023, later moved through other opposition vehicles and now stands as NDC flagbearer, with former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso widely named as running mate. INEC’s published 2027 list identifies him as the NDC candidate.
He has accused the Federal Government of trying to keep him off the ballot after legal turbulence around the party’s registration.
Fact-checkers this week also knocked down a social media claim that he had already stepped down for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. He has not.
None of that settles the money question he posed in America. A dare of “show me one dollar” is vivid and easy to repeat.
It is also hard for the public to audit in real time. Campaign finance in Nigeria is weakly disclosed.
Diaspora gifts, if they exist, often move through proxies, committees and cash that never appear in a candidate’s pocket on camera. Critics will say the challenge is theatre. Allies will say it matches the frugal brand he has sold since 2023.
What can be reported today is simpler. Mr Peter Obi is in the United States. He says the trip is not a collection drive. He says his bills are his own.
