Public affairs analyst Jide Ojo says Peter Obi may leave ADC if Atiku Abubakar secures the party’s 2027 presidential ticket
Public affairs analyst Jide Ojo has said former presidential candidate Peter Obi may leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if he fails to secure the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election.

Ojo made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief* programme.
He said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who joined the ADC in November 2025, could outspend Obi if the party adopts indirect primaries.
“Rumour has it that Atiku has been a very generous spender during party primaries,” Ojo said.
He added that if a free and fair ADC primary produces Atiku as candidate, Obi may seek another political platform.
Ojo also said Atiku is keen on controlling the party’s nomination process, a factor he believes could disadvantage Obi.
The analyst noted that Obi’s defection from the Labour Party to ADC on December 31, 2025, significantly boosted the opposition coalition.
According to him, at least four senators from the Southeast, 16 House of Representatives members, and several State Assembly members defected alongside Obi.
He contrasted this with Atiku’s exit from the Peoples Democratic Party weeks earlier, noting that no serving governor or lawmaker followed him.
Ojo stressed that Obi is determined to contest the 2027 presidential election as a principal candidate.

“If someone says they will be on the ballot, it means they want to be the candidate, not a running mate. That is Peter Obi’s position,” he said.
