National Grassroots Movement condemns plot against Akpabio, urging vigilance to protect Senate leadership and national legislative stability
The National Grassroots Movement has raised the alarm over a “well-coordinated scheme” by a bloc of northern senators to remove the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

The group described the alleged manoeuvre as a threat to legislative stability and national unity.
The allegation follows recent denials by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who dismissed claims of an impeachment plot as unfounded and designed to create division within the Red Chamber.
Bamidele was responding to Senator Orji Kalu’s assertion that attempts to remove Akpabio had failed.
In a statement issued on Monday, the NGM, through its National Coordinator Tunde Felix and National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Musa Mustapha, praised Akpabio for providing “steady and nationally balanced leadership” to the 10th National Assembly.
The group emphasised that his collaborative approach with the executive has stabilised governance during a critical period for Nigeria.
“The National Grassroots Movement raises the alarm over credible political manoeuvres pointing to a well-coordinated scheme by a bloc of northern senators to remove the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for selfish purposes,” the statement read.
The group noted that while leadership changes are constitutionally permissible, engineering them through premeditated alliances for personal or sectional gain undermines national interest and threatens legislative stability.
It condemned the use of ethnicity, religion, or numerical strength to seize Senate leadership.
“Sectional ambition must not override national interest, and anyone attempting to sabotage the Tinubu administration or destabilise the Senate will be held accountable,” the NGM warned, calling on party members, democratic stakeholders, and patriotic Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect institutional integrity.

The statement concluded that any effort to create crisis for narrow ambitions would be resisted politically, exposed publicly, and rejected morally.
