ADC claims APC and presidency betrayed Rivers State Governor Fubara amid impeachment proceedings, raising political tensions in the state
Austin Okai, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of betraying Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid ongoing impeachment proceedings. Okai said some elements in the presidency had “scammed” the governor by refusing to intervene in the process.

“If the presidency is protecting him, by now the whole impeachment process should have died down. He has gone to a local court for survival; his hope is hanging on the judiciary,” Okai said.
He added that Fubara could not even control members of his own House of Assembly despite being the sitting governor.
Okai, a former Peoples Democratic Party candidate for the Dekina/Bassa federal constituency, suggested that the impeachment was intended to limit Fubara to a single term.
“Maybe they don’t need him. You will weigh the option what does he have to offer compared to what Wike has to offer? It’s a matter of choice at this moment,” he added.
Meanwhile, Rivers elder statesman Wenendah Wali described the impeachment process as complex and unpredictable.
Wali explained that the process is strictly constitutional and depends heavily on the Chief Judge (CJ) and the committee he constitutes.
“Everything squarely depends on the CJ right now and the panel that he constitutes. If they see that the governor breached the grounds for impeachment, every member of the committee will vote. The majority vote will determine whether the governor should be impeached,” Wali said.
He drew parallels with international precedents, noting that impeachment does not always result in removal from office.
“For example, President Trump in the U.S. was impeached but not removed from office. It’s difficult to say whether they are going to succeed or not,” Wali added.
The ongoing saga has intensified political debate in Rivers State, with analysts and party officials monitoring the developments closely.

For now, the final outcome rests on judicial proceedings and committee recommendations.
