Sanwo-Olu highlights integrity and governance as central to prosperity at CIoD Dinner and Awards Night in Lagos
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has emphasised that governance is pivotal to restoring public confidence and unlocking long-term prosperity under the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, speaking at the Chartered Institute of Directors Dinner and Awards Night.

The governor outlined Lagos State’s commitment to collaborating with the institute to strengthen governance, noting that authority holds value only when guided by integrity, honour, and sound leadership principles.
Addressing the complex environment in which directors operate, Mr Sanwo-Olu cited unpredictable markets, evolving technology, stakeholder demands, and sustainability pressures.
He urged directors to remain informed and accountable, highlighting that strong institutions are crucial for economic development.
“To all directors, continue to champion transparency and mentor the next generation, and yes, Lagos is willing to collaborate with CIoD as part of our recommitment to excellence in leadership,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said.
Michael Olawale-Cole, Chief Executive Officer of Colenson Brokers Nigeria Ltd., reflected on leadership triumphs, describing them not merely as destinations but as journeys defined by resilience.
He stressed the importance of integrating clarity, courage, and connection into decision-making to navigate challenging times successfully.
CIoD President Adetunji Oyebanji noted that the event’s theme celebrated directors who uphold sound judgment, stability, and clarity despite economic and social pressures.
He reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to raising standards of directorship, strengthening advocacy, and pursuing alliances that promote ethical leadership.
The awards recognised outstanding contributions in governance and leadership.
BUA Cement received the CIoD Corporate Governance Award, while Shamsuddeen Usman, Chairman of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, was honoured for exemplary governance.
Ibukun Awosika, founder of Chair Centre Group, was presented with the CIoD Entrepreneurial Award, and the Anofi Goubadia Award for Leadership and Excellence went to Oscar Onyema, former CEO of Nigerian Exchange Ltd.
